the 3rd wave of Automotive industy: Cybersecurity

The third wave written by Alvin Toffler is one of the important books in futurology. "the Wave" change entire lifestyle, system, and paradigm of human-being so we have to prepare impact of "the wave" and we can enjoy prosperity if we follow "the wave". I read it a quite long time ago and was impressed by the book. as Toffler said in this book, the trend of the Automotive industry also resemble.

The speed of the wave is faster and intense than we anticipate in the automotive field, so I homage Toffler's book "the third wave" and I tell you about "waves" in the automotive industry. As you see my previous column " the automotive third wave", It is similar what I want to say, but I can say this post is briefer and organized than the previous one.

the First wave: Quality

The 1970s to now, We call "modern era" in automotive history. As the industry is matured, We could realize that the first wave is "Quality". many carmakers tried to appeal their car's quality. not only Toyota but also Mercedes Benz. As you know, two companies are representing their national automotive industry, in the beginning, they were different, but this period, they emphasized quality regardless of nationality.

Japan automotive industry, at first time, emphasized cost-efficiency. no need to waste money for buying vehicles, for refueling, and repairs. it made japan vehicle = good quality in oil shock period. because of Japan invasion with the first wave, American muscles are no longer selling well in America.

German automotive industry is known as the origin of automotive. even though they suffer from war, they could be developed the country with mechanical industry. As long as their long history, their industry also matured. "de facto" made their mechanical device high quality, it made many people think german = good quality.

2000s, Korea automotive company "Hyundai" showed us that Quality is still "the wave" in automotive industry. the chairman of Hyundai cried out "Quality management" and hyundai sharply grew up. hyundai had to build a plant per year in the period 2000 to 2010.

The second wave suddenly came to us as the name "unintended acceleration", and the wave is new challenge for carmakers.

the Second wave: safety

Since Toyota "unintended acceleration" event, safety became hot issue. many people think Toyota is the top of Quality a.k.a kaizen, 5S, and TPM, also we have ever heard TPS. However, Toyota got crisis because of this event. Yes,the second wave "safety" came to automotive industry suddenly.

They had to bleed a lot of money for recall. German automotive industry used functional safety concept as a disclaimer so they could evade the new hardship. This is why carmakers want tier1 and 2 to do functional safety activities because nobody wants to waste profit. this wave make 2 aspects.

ISO26262 has been released in 2011, European automotive companies could make technical gaps between fast-followers(china, india, new carmakers) and themselves. Korea automotive industry also got panic because of functional safety, and many companies tried to have the governence and organization for doing functional safety activity. we studied together, shared cases, and benchmarked european automotive industry. As an engineer, I also suddenly got a lot of paper work. I had to learn how to use management tools.

However, with the diesel gate in 2015, the new wave came in the era of safety . A new wave of change that is unparalleled than before has reached a new era, Security.

The third wave: security

electrification, connectivity, sharing mobility and autonomous driving, new trends of The automotive industry is facing the change of paradigm. this change is different from previous changes. vehicles are no longer the flower of a mechanical engineering but electronic devices. On the market side, numerous EV start-ups such as Tesla and Libyan have participated in the car market, and the Chinese electric car companies are making great stride. IT companies such as Google are also showing interest in the automotive industry. They undertook many project of autonomous driving and connectivity.

Internally, companies are being forced to do things differently from previous methods, such as business processes, organizations, and systems used, and in the meantime, they have begun to realize that vehicle hacking, which has never been cared for in the automotive industry, could be a big problem.

FCA's car hacking case and Tesla hacking case are some of the most common cases. So the third wave of security is different from the torrents of previous transformations, and if you want to survive this torrent, it's hard to stick to what you've done before.

At first, there is a movement of legislation in the UNECE. Once entered into international law, automakers must bear heavy penalties if problems arise after CSMS type approval. The basis of the law will be ISO / SAE 21434, which is enacted in collaboration with ISO and SAE

The requirements of the document demand to establishing processes and governance beyond development to ensure security throughout the entire lifecycle of the vehicle, production, marketing, maintenance, and disposal. This is different from the previous ISO26262 case, so it will be very difficult if you try to access the this problem with the previous experience.
