the Automotive Third Wave - part 1 the First wave

the First wave: Past

Beginning of Automotive industry's history, the first main character were Europeans. The UK started "Industry Revolution", a lot of mechanical technologies is growing like exploding. This Empire influent other countries like France and Prussia. of course the empire give their son inspiration, this son who named "U.S.A" also started to make cars. One of the American company "Ford" hit the vehicle markets(you might know "model T" and its production speed), it triggered that many people can afford to have cars in Europe after WW2, they surrendered but their technologies were still alive. with Miracle on the Rhine, German joined the leading group in Europe. Soon, Germany became the Fast runner of the Automotive industry. They had made "De facto" 1970s.

De facto

De facto means the industry standard. Germany has a famous association "VDA". they made standard and guide for the automotive industry, its result showed the global market that German car is the best. De facto was the most essential factor of brand power. No doubt with German, don't you? Who dares talk about Bosch or Porche without respect? They made Quality and Trust for their goods with "De facto".

EGAS monitoring concept

Few VDA members made the working group for EGAS monitoring concept. this standard influent other systems, this became the source of Functional safety. Engine Throttle control system replaced the traditional throttle control by cable, they need to monitor that is working well or no failure because E/E system is the controller of ETC system instead of a driver. EGAS working group focused on two aspects of monitoring view. First, signals are corresponding properly. No longer direct control but the sensor send the signal to the control unit, and then the control unit controls the actuator. then the status of signals must be monitored. According to ISO26262, this is about "random hardware failure". Second, when we make the control unit, we don't know if it is made properly and perfectly. so EGAS working group followed CMMI and spice production process. According to ISO26262, this is about "systematic failure".

Globalization

EU is expanded, and the global market's atmosphere flows to free trade. German "De facto" needs to be expanded for fast runners for example; the German automotive industry. they make a technical hurdle and block followers; Korea, China and so on. Anyway, the result of globalization published international standard ISO26262. and they emphasized SAFETY. "Toyota airbag" was the trigger that the global automotive industry has to spend budget and research power to safety.
